Apps and Music Promotion

Music Promotion

With the increasing variety of listening options available to consumers music promotion is becoming more difficult. The internet provides a fantastic platform for all artists to show off their music to large audiences, so to stand out from the growing crowd a musician needs to know how best to use it, and app developers are well placed to help them with this. Targeted app development can allow artists to create a personalised space that they can use to provide fans, and potential fans, with information such as tour dates and release dates. By integrating feeds and features from other useful music apps such as Last.Fm and Soundcloud, app developers can increase traffic to the artist’s pages on those sites through them all being linked together. The app itself will also increase the overall audience, as people will likely download it purely through curiosity.

Promotion through app development also has the huge advantage of portability; nowadays people spend an increasingly large amount of time using smartphones and tablets wherever they go, be it while working out at the gym, commuting to work or just relaxing at home. With this comes a plethora of advertising opportunities, and musicians can enlist the help of app developers to maximise their visibility wherever people are.

iPad as a powerful editing tool on the go

Demo - Budgie - Daystar after editing on Photogene

Big thanks for Priti Shikotra for writing this guest blog post for us.

‘What camera do you use?’
‘What lenses do you use?’
‘What software do you use to edit?’

These are some of the questions i get asked when I tell someone I’m a a photographer -
it’s like the ice breaker!

Like any other field – its not always the tools you use but what you do with them. As a photographer – i think you can use any type of camera to capture a single moment. That’s not to say that you don’t need good glass though such as for capturing motion and low-light – but you can essentially – use your phone or a point and shoot to get a great shot. Its the vision that you have that allows you to capture that moment.

Depending on the type of photographer you are – you may edit your work heavily – personally i try not to edit my work too much. I think it can potentially take away from the shot.

Generally i use software on my mac to make these little changes to my work.

With the intro of tablets – specifically the iPad – there’s been a whole different ball game involved in how you can work within the industry. You just have to look at the works of artists like Kyle Lambert who can show just how powerful the iPad really is.

One of the apps i like to use on the iPad is photogene. This is a photo editing app which is pretty powerful for on the go. For example, in a real life situation, if i’m shooting a wedding, I have the option to transfer a few shots to the iPad, quickly make slight changes to them and have them played back to the visitors at a stand or for the bride and groom to see them on the day. I’ve had my bride wanting to see photos as I take them! I just cant say no!

I downloaded it first to my iPhone a couple years ago and then the iPad version was released and i downloaded it on to there and had a play. This app is simple to use and if you use it the right way – you can get some pretty good results.

Shot of Budgie on the left before the edit, and to the right after, after edit.

So what I’ve done for this demo is brought in a shot of Budgie from Daystar – i shot them live at Drybar in Manchester earlier this year. As you can see, the original shot has the color and lighting – a lot of the time I vision shots in black and white – when processing them after capturing them I edit them on my mac. On this occasion I’ve brought it into photogene. The app has a preset section – for anyone that isn’t familiar with photo editing software, this is a great tool in the app to just hit and apply the filter to your photo – with a touch of your finger your pic can look totally different. For someone that may be a little more advanced and want to have more control of how and what you want the shot to look at – you can hit the adjustments panel and it gives you a whole load of control over the shot you’re editing. I’ve basically knocked down the saturation to convert it to black and white and sharpened the image off – one of my things is to blur out the back so the subject is more defined. Hit the retouches option and there’s an option for blur – notice the blur on the bg between image one and 2 – very subtle but i feel it makes a difference in my shots. Of course it depends on what you have captured.”Plenty of options available within the app to allow you to edit the shot as much or as little as you want”

There’s a fair few different options you can play around with depending on the desired results. As I say, it depends on how much you want to edit your work.

There’s an option for text, so in this instance I have added some text to watermark the image – there’s the standard apple fonts to choose from and you have the option to change the colour of the text and also add outlines to the text. I have selected an outline and put
dragged the box to the bottom right of the image.

Plenty of options available within the app to allow you to edit the shot as much or as little as you want

Metadata option is very useful. Here your able to embed the information on to the file such as copyright information and credits. This information generally is embedded to the file so when accessed / viewed online – the electronic data is linked to you the photographer as the ‘owner’ if you like.

A great use for the text is embedding a watermark on to the shot and it’s so easy to share across to different platforms

The export option has again got a fair few different options. The great thing about this is not only can you just hit upload to social networking sites such as twitter and facebook – but also the option of sharing via dropbox and email is handy. Also, you can select what
resolution you want to export in – so if you want to keep hold of the original res, then you can – or if you want to reduce the rate, then you can hit that option!

NOVA

For those of you wondering – the title picture of this blog post is anothe Gameloft title – Nova!

We enjoy being iPad app developers as much as anything. Especially as we must continue researching new releases and innovations in mobile apps. In this short blog post we will be focusing on the games category and in particular, Gameloft. It’s almost an injustice to refer to these guys only iPad app developers as in reality they create for most mobile platforms. They have created a wide range of high quality and graphically intensive games. With the gameplay being consistently good. In reality Gameloft are a huge organisation with a myriad of iPad app developers, iPhone app developers, Android app developers and more! But their focus on games has certainly led them to specialise in their field. The game which inspired this post was Real Football 2012 on the iPad. Great game with all the features you would expect from a high quality sports app. But the freemium model has been so well thought out. These app developers have been up all night trying to work out how best to reel in our in app purchases and its starting to work!

See below for the list of Gameloft titles! Its a long list! (Taken from Wiki)

Great App Developers Created Flipboard!

Flipboard-for-android

Yes I’m aware that this is our second post about the Flipboard app. Although the inital post was purely to direct you to the Android App download for non Samsung Galaxy S3 phone users!

We’ve been using Flipboard more and more at The App Media Co office and it gets better and better. Although this app has been available on the iPhone for some time. Now that the Android version is installed on my Samsung Galaxy S2 I have grown to love the personalised features.

The app developers have integrated what is probably the best Facebook interface I have seen with  a sleek flipboard display, stylised like buttons and easy comment features. The layout and app UI makes it so easy to quickly flick through your Facebook feed. Its very efficient. Also the Twitter feed works in a  similar manner. Flick through and see content from the links that people have posted. Its at this point you think “these app developers have thought of everything”, but there is more!

The ability to select relevant news content and have it all in one place with various sources for articles is amazing. Varied content and an engaging app user interface.

Use this app in combination with Pocket for offline viewing and you have a complete mobile app powered solution even when there is no Internet connection!

The Flipboard App Developers have done well!
