Apps are fast becoming one of the most popular ways of looking at online content. More and more businesses are [...]

Apps are fast becoming one of the most popular ways of looking at online content. More and more businesses are having apps developed for their companies, and the question of whether an app is actually more beneficial than a website is becoming more prominent.

One of the more obvious benefits of an app is its portability, which allows content to be accessed anywhere. While on most phones this is also the case for websites, there are some places where the internet cannot be accessed, and this means that all parts of a website are inaccessible. App developers can design apps so that the content from the last time the app has been used is still stored on the phone, and so this data can still be accessed, albeit out of date.

Another positive of apps is that the experience can entirely be controlled by the app developers, whereas websites are viewed through a variety of different web browsers and have certain limits of functionality. Also, as something that is owned, an app feels more like a freebie than a website that is just observed, and so apps feel wasted if not used.

Websites also have their positives. Because they have been around much longer than apps, people are more familiar with making their own websites, and some people have created businesses focused around allowing customers to customise their various template websites, giving them the opportunity to have their own website with minimal technical knowledge. Apps, however, still require technical knowhow to develop, and so if someone wants to make an app they either have to spend a significant amount of time learning app development themselves or pay app developers to create it for them.

As apps become more popular as a platform more and more businesses are having apps developed. Like having a website, this has some large benefits, the most obvious one being a massive increase in the audience reached by the business. For small businesses, having an online presence gives them access to customers all over the world rather than just people in the local area. Depending on the aspirations of the people involved this can be a good or a bad thing, as some businesses, for example catering businesses, aren’t suited to international work. Of course, the promotion of the app can be aimed towards people within the same country as the business to decrease international interest that will increase enquiry processing times.

Order processing is another thing that app development can help small businesses with; app developers can create forms that require certain details for orders to be placed, for example, with a catering business, the number of people food needs to be provided for. This can increase efficiency as the business will receive this information in a simple and uniform format, instead of having to repeatedly deal with often indecisive customers.

Having an app can allow companies to carry out business on their terms, and so it can be very good idea for a business to have an app developed, but the initial cost of the app development can sometimes be too great for a business that’s just starting out, and then the cost of app promotion needs to also be considered. All in all, whether a company should utilise app development depends on the business and its aims.

Nowadays music festivals are more popular than ever, with a lot of new events emerging every year. Some of these are as simple as a field with a stage and some toilets while others are so much more. For the latter it can be difficult for the punter to keep track of what’s going on, and buying and then carrying around an expensive programme can be awkward. One increasingly popular solution to this problem is to develop mobile apps.

While some people are hesitant about taking their smartphones to festivals, more people seem to be doing so as they realise how useful festival apps can be. App developers can create areas for stage times, artist profiles and many more things to be displayed, and even better, they can make these variable so that if an act has cancelled last minute or is running late the organisers can let the fans know. Even more interesting functions can be added by app developers, such as site maps or a tent finder function that, using GPS, can allow the user to mark where their tent is so they can easily find it again later.

Some people may enjoy getting away from technology when heading to a festival, but for those of us that enjoy our comforts, app development can be used to help us make the most of our time away.

While I don’t listen to the radio particularly often, TuneIn Radio is one of the best developed apps I have used, and therefore one of my favourite apps. The app developers have added every functional detail imaginable in a radio app. It has the option to listen to national and local radio stations from all over the world, and all on the go. It can display digital playlist and schedule information like a physical digital radio, and it lets you share this information through various social networks. The app developers have also implemented a function that uses the phone’s memory to temporarily store the broadcast, allowing the user to pause and rewind live radio. Additionally, it has easily accessible links to each radio station’s web page and twitter feed, that are very useful for interacting with the radio station.

These are only a few of the features, but the app development has been done so well that they have created an incredibly intuitive and clutter-free user interface while sustaining a large variety of content. The app designers have made it fit in visually with iOS, but with it’s own individual simplistic flair. I would say that this is a model app. The only downside being that the TuneIn Radio doesnt provide individual brand recognition for your radio station.

With the rise of the home studio more and more people are starting to write and record their own music. [...]

With the rise of the home studio more and more people are starting to write and record their own music. The improvement of personal computers and the recording software available at low prices has a lot to do with this, as previously home recording was expensive and impractical. As people now carry around devices with incredible capabilities wherever they go this process can be carried out on the go, and app development is what facilitates this.

While music apps originally started out as more of an impractical novelty, they have now gained a lot of credibility. Many large synth companies such as Koss and Moog have used app developers to create virtual versions of many of their most popular products, and in most cases they have all of the functionality for a fraction of the cost. Even entire recording suites have been released, including a version of Apple’s popular Garageband software.

In addition to instruments and recording apps, developers have created apps that apply effects to an input signal. Some of these require a physical interface, such as Amplitube’s iRig, which allows you to use the app in a live setting as well as during practice.

These apps haven’t just been used by amateurs; Damon Albarn’s multi-platinum selling project Gorillaz recorded the entirety of their latest album on an iPad, experimenting with a large range of app developers’ creations. The production value of the end result is indistinguishable from that which you’d find on an album that had been created in a high-end studio.

Whenever a new Apple product is released there’s an incredible buzz surrounding it, and with the iPad 3 it was no different. An unprecedented amount of people placed pre-orders, resulting in a shortage of the device early on. In the end, 3 million iPads were sold in the first 3 days that they were on sale. But what makes them so appealing?

First on the list of new features is the “retina display”, which has a significantly higher number of pixels-per-inch than the iPad 2. This gives the images on screen a smoother, more natural appearance, but for it to work the source images need to be of this resolution, and so app developers will have the unenviable job of redeveloping all of the visuals of their apps.

Next up is the new Apple A5X chip, which greatly increases the processing power of the iPad. While some of this additional power will be going towards running other new features, the excess will allow app developers to create more complex apps involving even more complex computation.

Also added was the new 5 megapixel camera, which is capable of recording full 1080p video to keep up with the improved display. While there are more obvious uses of these new features, the increased image clarity can improve the results in apps based around human interaction. App development in this area is largely based around novelty at the moment (Zombie Booth, Bald Booth etc.), but as the technology grows more reliable a whole new range of opportunities is opened up to app developers.

Last of all, the new iPad 3 has inbuilt 4G capabilities in the higher-end models. While this technology isn’t available in all areas of the world yet it won’t be long until it is, and so this is an investment in the future more than anything else. Once working, this will allow people to have an incredibly fast wireless internet connection, something that is becoming increasingly necessary as cloud-based storage becomes more popular.

While the new changes brought in with the iPad 3 aren’t revolutionary they are significant enough for it to be worth buying, although it’s worth considering that it has only been a year since its predecessor was released. If Apple can sustain this rate of improvement then their future will be an exciting one.

Today I’m going to write about one of my favourite apps: Final Fantasy III. When people think about gaming on smartphones they often think of casual games like Cut The Rope or Angry Birds. Of course, these apps have their merits: easily interrupted, addictive gameplay and the potential for endless updates due to there being no plot. But the serious gamer wants an immersive experience, and now smartphones have become the fastest growing gaming platform these types of games need to be developed for these new platforms. Final Fantasy III is one of these games.

Final Fantasy III is a fantasy RPG that app developers have ported from the Nintendo DS remake of the 1990 game, and this has been done so seamlessly that the phone is forgotten within minutes. The app creators actually improved the graphics of the game for the iOS release to support the retina display, which, for a great reduction in price from the DS version, is quite impressive. Unlike a lot of attempts at making “real” games for a smartphone the gamepad style controls don’t feel forced, and the app developers have allowed full customisation to fit everyone’s needs. The app development has been carried out very well.

As with all Final Fantasy games it takes a long time to complete and has a large amount of replay value, which is an ideal model for app developers as it will be an app that won’t be forgotten by users, and will therefore sell at a relatively consistent rate due to word of mouth. All things considered, RPGs could be very economical for app developers to create.

While I haven’t touched on the content of the game in this post, that isn’t really the focus. In app development there are a lot of ideas with quality content, but in practice the content is hindered by its presentation and how it’s carried out. Final Fantasy III, along with having fantastic content, has these aspects perfected, and that’s why it’s one of my favourite apps.
